Chinese Medicine Vs Western Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a written history dating back over 2500 years.

Behind each consultation lies a substantial body of ancient knowledge and wisdom.

It is a stand-alone, integrated system of medicine.

For many centuries it was the primary health care model practiced in China.

It continues to play an integral role in modern China’s healthcare system.

In Australia Chinese Medicine exists within the framework of the Western Medicine healthcare model.

Concepts fundamental to Chinese Medicine philosophy and practice simply do not exist or correlate in any way with Western Medical understanding.

Chinese Medicine evolved and developed in ancient times, in a foreign culture using a different language.

It evolved completely independent of and far predating the history of Western Biomedical Science.

Chinese Medicine does not use the diagnostic language and sophisticated Latin based jargon of Western Medicine.

Instead it uses simplistic, nature based language.  Words like heat, cold, wind and damp are commonly used to describe illness.

Chinese Medical anatomy and physiology is based upon the meridian or energy system of the body, the principles of yin and yang and a concept known as five element theory.

These fundamental foundations of thinking are not acknowledged or remotely understood by Western ideology.

Differences in language, culture and thought represent inherent difficulties to establishing and building effective communication between Eastern and Western medicine.

Fortunately the struggle with understanding and communication does not detract from the inherent efficacy of Chinese medicine, which works far beyond the realm of the rational mind.

What consumers do need to be aware of is that Chinese Medicine has both its strengths and weaknesses.

The benefit of Eastern and Western medical systems coexisting in Australia is that it gives consumers freedom of choice to decide how best to care for themselves utilising the relative strengths of both medical systems.
